Conversion of a coal fire?

My house was built in 1950 and has a coal fire. When I look into the vent, which is filled with paper and when my husband was on the roof cleaning the gutters, we see that the chimney is closed. We were told when we bought the house that had been "definitively closed." My question is, is there any way to have records opened and the gas or electricity to? There is no way that could become in a fireplace because there is so shallow it was meant for coal. Anyone know anything about it, suggestions on who to call, etc prices? I have no idea. Thanks!

You can put in the electric logs without opening the fireplace (if flammable rid of that role). Gas combustion require approval, which could be costly to restore.
