Glitter in the Gutter

Glitter in the Gutter

It took three albums, but Jesse Malin’s finally made it. What does that mean? It means that he’s finally assembled the record he’s been trying to put together since his debut (which was a good record). Glitter in the Gutter is a fully realized collection of solidly crafted pop/rock songs that are as lyrically substantive and poetic as the music that goes with them. Produced by Rob Caggiano and Eddie Wohl for Adeline Records, Malin is the epitome of the street rocker with a poet’s heart. Rolling in California, for the first time on a record — and for the first time above 14th Street in New York City — Malin recruited old pal Ryan Adams to play guitar on a couple of cuts, Jakob Dylan to sing a backing vocal, and some guy named Bruce Springsteen to help him sing a duet on killer little ballad called “Broken Radio” complete with strings. This cut is the proof, though the record is filled with it, that Malin has become one of those fine rock & roll storytellers who has equal parts melodrama, hedonism, poetry, swagger and timing. The story of a former lover, someone hidden from the view of the protagonist, as Adams’ guitars entwine with a piano and strings and ambient sounds, the tempo is slow and Malin’s croon sounds like a man on the fire escape reminiscing to the night sky: “She used to talk about astrology/She was born in June/She danced with strangers and celebrities/Empty stars and full moon/I was thinking about the universe/For what it’s worth/Or the one about the phoenix bird/That died and then returned.” He jumps right back with the wild rocker “Prisoners of Paradise” and evokes all the desperation of the bleary-eyed romantics in the young Springsteen with the soul of Willy DeVille and the savvy wisdom of Elliott Murphy and is louder and prouder than all three. “Black Haired Girl” is another city story, it’s all blazing guitars and sweet melodies. There’s a wild vulnerability in the singer though he’s trying hard to be in control. “Lucinda,” well, we know who that one’s about. There are a few songs on her album West about Malin, too.But Malin doesn’t have to wait until the middle of the record to shine. He does it from the first cut, when he leaves the country-ish tinge present on his earlier records for good. The ringing guitars on “Don’t Let Them Take You Down” become a lone acoustic that gives way to a cracking snare and big ringing electrics courtesy of Lizzy Lee Vincent and Justin Lomery: “We were born in flames, maiden names/Suburban homes, make your bones/Bite your lip, take the fifth…And it’s my generation and the whole world is breakin my heart.” He goes out of it roaring with all the romance rock & roll can promise when it splits reality in two: “Don’t let them take you down/It’s a beautiful day/Don’t let them mess you around.” Coming up in the ’80s through the hardcore punk scene, Malin’s proving that he’s matured but that he believes, though he’s got no illusions about what’s happening all around him. Speaking of the ’80s, Mali

Daytona Beach metalheads the Autumn Offering may have worked hard to establish their own sound on their debut, Revelations of the Unsung, originally issued in 2003 and re-released as an enhanced disc by Victory in 2006. The way they’ve done it is to embrace the music of their heroes, from Guns N’ Roses to Slayer, Metallica and early Iron Maiden to Emperor and other black metal acts — musically, not lyrically. If anything, the lyrics these Southerners spout have more in common with political punk rock than anything else; a comment they won’t take as a compliment. Whatever. These guys can play everything. Check out the contrast of styles in “The Yearning” alone, from driving thrash metal to melodic solos drenched in early-’90s Brit metal. It’s flow that counts when people play as widely divergent styles as this. And Autumn Offering have it, each track seamlessly blasts into the next: check out the way the aforementioned flows stylistically into “Ghost,” which even has traces of Thin Lizzy in its bridge riff! The stomp, snarl, and roar of “One Last Thrill” is the rocking-est thing on the set and just screams from start to finish. Vocally, fans of screamed, low-end guttural wailing will dig the proceedings, but on this track, it’s almost a chant, As for nu-metal, these young cats have it down. They know how to write, how to play, and are getting better with each release. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Dennis Miller – Vocals; Matt Johnson – Guitar; Nick Gelyon – Drums; Sean Robbins – Guitar (Bass); Tommy Church – Guitar

San Francisco’s Pidgeon debut their indie-pop-emo-punk with From Gutter With Love on Absolutely Kosher. The aggressive, distorted guitars and female/male vocal interaction on From Gutter With Love give a huge nod to ’90s groups like Pixies, Velocity Girl, Tsunami and Star Pimp. Pidgeon are at their best when they layer on the male/female pop harmonies against the distortion of the guitars, as on “Six Minutes in the Sun” or “Sty.” With three guitarists, one would think that the production on From Gutter With Love would be thicker and parts more pronounced. On most tracks, Pidgeon get their ideas across, but on others they seem to mess with the core of songs in an unfocused way, confusing themselves and the listener. From Gutter With Love is a very long record, clocking in at 55 minutes. Pidgeon may have too many areas that they are trying to cover with their debut, but focusing on their strengths could reveal powerful moments on their future releases. ~ David Serra, Rovi Performers: Micah – Singer, Vocals, Guitar; Stick – Guitar; Troy – Drums; Valerie – Singer, Guitar, Vocals

Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town

Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town

$13.57

After nearly 15 years shackled to Curb Records, who clearly had no idea what to do with him and fought his restless spirit at every turn, Hank Williams III is a free agent and eager to make up for lost time. Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town is one of three albums Hank3 released on the same day through his own label, and while the other two albums are devoted to Hank’s hardcore rock & roll, the first half of this two-disc set is the most straightforward country set he’s released since Straight to Hell in 2006. Of course, Hank3′s idea of a straightforward country album isn’t much like what anyone in Nashville has ever done; while these tunes may feature plenty of chicken-pickin’ guitar, fiddle, banjo, and accordion, “Ridin’ the Wave” roars down the road like Mötorhead, “Don’t Ya Wanna” is a cheerfully rude celebration of sex and wild times, the creepy filtered vocals of “The Devil’s Movin’ In” are filled with menace, “Ghost to a Ghost” is punctuated by Cookie Monster-style death metal vocalizing, and Hank’s dog Trooper even gets a turn on the vocal mike on “Trooper’s Holler.” Like Straight to Hell, Hank recorded Ghost to a Ghost at home on a portable digital recording rig, and he seems to be relishing the opportunity to do whatever he wants, mixing rock guitars and double-kick drumming with banjos and acoustic guitars, letting the mix sound murky and smoky rather than squeaky clean, and even letting Ray Lawrence, Jr. take the lead for a couple tunes. But Hank really runs free on the second disc, Gutter Town, which resembles the surreal “Louisiana Stripes” bonus disc that came with Straight to Hell. Punctuated by long passages of swampy sound effects, most of the songs on Gutter Town find Hank3 toying with Cajun music, and he sounds like he’s having a grand time hooting and hollering in a mixture of English and French while the band winds up like they’re the rowdiest guys in Baton Rouge. Gutter Town also includes a glorious, swaggering duet with Tom Waits on “Fadin’ Moon” that’s the set’s most satisfying moment, and closes with an odd but successful a cappella experiment with Les Claypool of Primus, “With the Ship,” which is a rare moment where Hank actually sounds playful. Hank3 recorded, mixed, and mastered Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town as well as writing nearly all the songs, and the best moments howl with freedom and creative liberation; however, he also seems determined not to throw anything away, and as a consequence, this set feels overstuffed, and some judicious editing (particularly of the spooky weirdness on Gutter Town) would have been a good idea. But Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town is easily the purest expression of Hank3′s crazed country vision to date, and anyone who’s followed his wild ride owes it to themselves to give it a listen. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
