Birds in buildings

Many people are surprised to find birds that cause problems in buildings in urban areas, but the birds are actually very common in cities and many species potentially create problems in buildings. Fortunately, by understanding the birds that most often cause problems and architectural features that are attracted to buildings, birds usually annoying problems can be addressed by making the building less attractive to birds.

Bird problem
While any bird can potentially cause a problem in the buildings, most of the problems in American cities are caused by three species of birds introduced from Europe, pigeons, starlings and sparrows house. These birds adapted to living in European settlements and cities for thousands of years, and found an easy life living in and around buildings for the first time brought to America in past centuries. Early settlers first brought pigeons to the United States as a food source, while enthusiasts of the 19th century brought more of starlings and sparrows in a misguided effort to control caterpillars (sparrows) or enter the United States all the birds mentioned in the works of Shakespeare (starlings). All three of these species easily discarded human foods and nest in buildings, making the perfect urban invaders. Also these non-native birds, a few native birds can cause problems, especially when large numbers congregate on rooftops (crows, gulls, vultures, and from time to time) or nest in the exterior walls (swallows). In fact, birds that are invading cities do so well that there are usually more individual birds per square mile in the cities in the field!

What attracts birds to buildings?
Birds need food, safety, and nesting sites. target = "_blank"> The birds are attracted to buildings that are able to provide the needs of all processing plants can attract pigeons, starlings, sparrows, gulls, crows and other birds that clean food. Blocking access to food sources and making containers of waste that remain closed and All food wastes are quickly removed cleaned and the easiest way to eliminate this attractant.

Security When the birds are not nesting or for food, are usually rest and need a safe place to do it. Roofs and cornices are high that areas are safe from cats, dogs and other predators in the ground and provide a good lookout for intruders and other threats. Gulls, crows, pigeons, starlings and other birds can congregate during the day or sleep in security buildings at night. Often, a mall or other large complex of separate buildings, forests or other habitats by extensive parking lots is considered a night ideal perch birds trying to avoid the owls and other nocturnal predators. If the birds are loafing or resting in a building, the best way to eliminate the problem is to physical barriers, such as bird spikes, cables, a monitoring system of electric shock, or some other barrier to make it physically impossible for the birds use the area. Although it is generally preferable to install a physical deterrent system, if it is not possible or feasible, the area may be less attractive installation a sound or visual deterrents can scare the birds. Persistent large roosts may require to be dispersed by a professional wildlife licensed. Buildings such as shops and stores that are not completely sealed may attract sparrows or other birds that are protected inside the building more safer than outdoors. Whenever possible, buildings should be sealed to prevent entry of birds and birds that come to be trapped or netted and removed.

Nesting pigeons, starlings and sparrows prefer to nest in buildings . Doves often nest on ledges protected windows or rooftop equipment, while starlings and birds nest in the pipes, channels, vents, or other small openings in a building. The shelves should be covered with nails or altered with a slope of birds or other retrofit to eliminate the flat surface so that the birds do not mate or build can build their nests in open warehouses or other buildings, while the cliff swallows can build their nests in the outer walls of the building. These native species are protected by federal law, so the nests with eggs or babies can not be manipulated. Remove old nests after being used, or prevent birds initially build nests by using nets or other barriers that prevent the birds are able to build their nests.

Solving the problems of birds in the buildings
Once you have determined which bird being treated, and what seems to attract birds to your building, the first thing to consider is whether there is a way to physically stop the birds landing or nesting where not wanted. Finding a physical deterrent that can best address the size or type of birds question, and the exact structure you are trying to protect.

If there is no physical way to keep the birds off or out of your building, then you have to resort to behavioral controls that try to scare the birds. These devices can be visual or a sound system, while recognizing that if a bird if the birds are accustomed to see or hear the bird control devices without seeing a real threat in the long run will not be afraid of them anymore and you have to try another approach.
