Do It Yourself Energy Efficiency Projects: Your thermal envelope Home (Part 2)
Now, there are some things you can do at home to seal air to save money during the winter months and during the summer.
As mentioned in Part 1, your home is a â € € envelopeâ œthermal. That is the sum total of the s ™ € home insulation systems: walls, roofs, foundations, floors, windows and doors. These work more effectively with a good, tight seal may be that climate change and air. By having a tight seal on your home ™ € s of thermal design, the less energy you waste or lose through sharing too often with the outside air.
Now, wea € ™ re going to look outside doors, central laundry tank water heater, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), attic insulation, attic ventilation and rain gutters.
The presentation of The Doors!
We all want our doors to be attractive, safe, and the test of time. As windows, when properly installed and in good conditions, it can save energy and money. If the door is difficult to open or close, move the door frame around the opening or close the door, rattles, when closed, or see the light of day and feel of a project from around it, your door needs work.
When against a door doesn € ™ t properly, obviously not close. If your exterior door is difficult to open or close, the first thing to look for is if something is detected at the door or if there is anything that protrudes from the door frame, like a screw head does not fully tightened against the hinge. Next, determine ™ € s with a carpenters level if the door is hung Plumb (up and down) and if the door jambs are parallel. Sometimes, not a head tight screw on the hinge may prevent a door closes properly and longer deform and loosen the door frame or door. Also, check to see if any hinge movement toward or away from the door jamb or move. The hinges should be securely fastened to the door and the jamb of the door with no movement, except in the joint hinge.
I once lived in an old house and the back door was difficult to close because the entire image moved with him. He was one of those things that keep postponing to solve it. Then one night, I closed the door so hard that I closed the door and around the door frame on the wall of the house. I nailed in place to the night but the next morning, I started to repair it. The original had rusted nails to the thickness of the yarn, while the wooden wedges that kept the door well established had rotted because the humidity was introduced into the door frame.
If you move the door frame when opening or closing the door, donâ € ™ t put it off like I did fix it. Fix now. First, remove the casing from the inside, both the door and outside. Be careful â € "often in homes antique cabinet doors and other trim are unique or are no longer available. Sharp housing levers are perfect for this. With a little patience and care, you can remove the housing without damaging too. A putty knife and a hammer are also helpful. Again, be patient and careful â € "is not clearing destroy.
After removing the cover, look for any damage to wood that form the door frame, such as if it is rotten or split. Check if the wedges are in place and intact. If everything looks correct, check the box to see if vertical. Add shims as necessary and check that the door is opened and closed properly. Generally, it is easier to tack a piece 1? A-2? through the door when itâ € ™ s closed to the seat of the door frame correctly. When itâ € ™ s lead and footwear with nail under there. Then vacuum waste in the area and seal the joints and holes with caulk or expanding foam. Reattach the casing and cover the nail holes of age with the color matching wood putty.
If you can close a tissue at her door and then pull it with ease or if the noise gate rattles or wind, which means itâ € ™ s just not sitting snuggly. The easiest way from one place to this revision is to add weatherstripping. Usually, the doors made in the past 25 years have had weatherstripping built on them. But a door is hard work. Over time, the weather stripping is removed the door. In some cases, while extraction rates are used yet by the door manufacturer and can be easily replaced. Usually much older houses, itâ € ™ s not the case. Youâ € ™ ll be replacing worn Weather stripping applied to someone else, or youâ € ™ ll be brand new start.
First, measure the distance between the surface of the door and door jamb in several places. Add approximately 1 / 16 inch of this measure and this will give an approximate thickness of self-adhesive foam or felt they would have to apply. In general, I apply the foam to pull the door jamb. Since the doorjamb T doesn € ™ ir ™ Thereâ € s anywhere but an opportunity for something crash into it and start the foam. The door, however, is designed to move and will meet with all sorts of things in his travels. As mentioned, you want the door is closed firmly. Be sure to buy more foam you have to for you to add and adjust the foam until you have a good seal.
If the door is in a poor state of repair, then there really is no longer a matter of conditioning, but of security. Seriously consider replacing it. Exterior residential doors come in three standard widths: 30, 32 and 36 inches.
In general, most insulating material for an exterior door is wood, because doesn € ™ t conduct heat as readily as metal, vinyl or fiberglass. That said, most wooden doors inexpensive donâ € ™ t do well over time. They quickly in areas that have more contact (pullers doors and the foot area), the screws may loosen or tear, and according to the harsh climate can be dried and split. Steel doors provide additional security and resist wear, but they conduct heat. Wooden doors and steel doors foam core base last longer, are stronger, and better insulation. Doors fiberglass are usually the strongest, durable, insulating and well, but tend to be more expensive.
Door sweeps and door jambs with vinyl Weather-stripping
A ™ € s door more drafty area at the bottom is where the doorway. Most of peak thresholds are aluminum or wood to meet the bottom of the door and form a seal. However, since the door opened and the threshold is constantly treading factory-installed air conditioning can be done quickly. Can be quickly and easily replaced with a strip of self-adhesive vinyl that hangs from the bottom edge the door. I attached on the inside of the door.
Another type of door sweep vinyl using multiple strips to block projects. A little more expensive, but slides on the lower edge of the door and held with screws.
One product I've used with great success is PVC door jambs with a function Vinyl extraction time. Mounted on the outside of his door, the door jambs can replace their existing frameworks or slide on them. Vinyl Weather-stripping can be pushed up snugly in the door to prevent drafts when the door closes. Use a miter circular saw to make cuts at right angle to enable be mounted in place attractive. When in position, which can be quickly nailed or screwed into place and then painted. While such as these, there are many other similar kits that might be most appropriate for your particular job.
The Laundry Center
Large energy users in the laundry area of the washer and dryer. The typical washing machine uses about 0256 kWh per load. The major cost is obviously much hot water is used during loading. Top-loading washing machines use up to 40 gallons, while the front loaders use 10-24 gallons. It's easy to reduce costs hence by washing in warm or cold. However, primary energy savings comes from drying clothes. Although modern washing machines do an excellent job to extract water from clothes by spinning, they still have to be dried.
Dryers are not very efficient because they have a job: dry strength and hot air in a rotating drum to evaporate the water. Dryers use ten to fifteen percent of household energy in the United States. Dryers also causes lint. Lint comes to clothing fibers that were released as the fall of clothes through each other in a hot s ™ € dryer drum. Fluff does not only include in its S ™ € dryer lint trap, but also through the dryer ™ € s of duct work. If lint starts to obstruct or clog your ™ S € dryer duct, the water evaporated from his nice, clean clothes, which will leave the system. If water is trapped, it will take longer and longer for the dryer to work. Therefore, once a year, pull your dryer from the wall separating the duct from the bottom of the dryer and leave the fluff more as possible from the dryer and the duct. The first time you do this, you may be surprised how much they get. Youâ € ™ ll also notice a great improvement in the time takes for your blow dryer to dry clothes.
During the coldest months of winter when you are heating your home, you may notice your feeling dryer home. Although not always bad, if your skin feels dry and itchy, or if you notice that your breasts feel raw and irritated more often, maybe your house is too dry. One way around this is to disconnect the dryer vent tube from the duct work out of the house. Place a nylon stocking over the end of the vent pipe and tie in place with a long twist tie or rubber band. (Be sure to block ventilation to go out). Thus, every time you run your hair, you heat and a humidifier in your house too.
Hanging your clothes not only saves energy but also helps them last longer. Drying clothes in a grid of drying or clothing line. If you can not € ™ t hang out, you can hang inside by buying a retractable clothes line (not models are also available). Line installation in a hallway of his house and hang your clothes out to dry while on the job. Place a large floor fan in the hallway to help circulate air. Clothes dryer in the dryer for a few minutes until hot. This will relax the fibers and youâ ll ™ € avoid hard creases or clothing by hanging.
Log in Agua Caliente
The most expensive part of doing laundry is using hot water. And while it could choose to use hot or cold water for clothes with hot water for bathing or cooking or washing dishes is a major convenience. Currently, the most efficient way to heat water for a household water heater is a demand. While these are increasing in popularity in the U.S., most households still rely in the old tank style water heater. Basically, it is 40 or more gallons of water that is heated either by natural gas or electric heating elements. It is true that the method works well, but most of the energy used by tank water heaters just to keep the water hot standby and ready to use. This means that itâ € ™ s heating water when you are asleep or at work or on vacation. Therefore, it wastes a lot energy. The tank water heater with insulation wrap but adding more while saving energy.
Put a water heater blanket around of your water heater. Most water heater blankets at the center of origin tend to be of an inch thick so they can be sold in one piece, but not be too heavy to be held with tape. These are made of plastic covered with fiberglass and wraps around your water heater. In terms of factors R insulation (R-value indicates a ™ € s insulation resistance to heat flow), add about 3 RA € ™ s worth it.
You can make the blanket water heater with higher values of R. One method is to use reflective foil insulation (also known as paper dresses bubble-wrap) and cut enough strips long enough to go around your water heater twice. You can then add store-bought water heater blanket and have R value of over 7.5. With this amount of insulation, you should be able to refuse their heaterâ € ™ s thermostat and save even more money.
For security reasons, do not block any of the control panels, block bottom, or put any insulation on top of your water heater. Never obstruct the pressure release valve.
Keep hot water hot doesn € ™ t stop at the water heater. Insulating your water pipes hot also save energy and reduce energy costs. Consider this: every time the shower faucet, which let the water run until hot. Leta € ™ s say you pipe heater shower water is 20 feet long. Now, that could be only one quarter, but that can become a couple hundred gallons for a family of four in the course of a year. Also, consider that after the shower, still no hot water in the pipe. By adding insulation, hot water cools more slowly. If Insulate your pipes with sufficient effectiveness, heat the water heater is more efficiently contained in hot water pipes. You Wona € ™ t need to wait so long for hot water, you will waste less water, saving more money.
Venting Only € |
There are several ways to improve the efficiency of your heating, ventilation and air system air conditioning (HVAC). If you have a thermostat that isnâ € ™ t programmable switch off the oven, carefully disconnect the thermostat from the wall, and throw away.
Programmable thermostats can be found for under $ 25, are commonly found in home centers and are easy to install. They connect the same four wire leads connected to your old thermostat. By programming the temperature setting in your home to be colder in the winter or more hot during the summer when you are asleep or away, you can save energy and money.
Another easy way to increase efficiency is to monitor its systems € ™ s air filters regularly. Depending on your lifestyle must change filters regularly. If you live tends to be busy nearby street dust, or if you have pets, change the filters every month. In some households, can be done every three months.
While disposable filters are cheaper, the cost builds rapidly with time. Consider buying two washable air filters. Washable air filters usually cost less than $ 20 and can be rinsed out in a bathtub with soap and hot water (in the summer, I hit mine with pressure washing). By buying two, you may trade in a clean, dry properly when is time to change the other filter dirty.
One way to significantly improve your HVAC is to thoroughly check your duct work to ensure that the system is closed. The homeowner can save $ 300 of their annual heating and cooling costs by sealing duct work. From your HVAC system and the sensation of movement of air from small holes or gaps in the duct work. When you find one, put a piece of aluminum tape on HVAC hole. Remember: The total volume of filtered air, the more leaks you have the less efficient the system. Check the entire run of duct work, feel for air leakage of duct seams and joints in good condition. Check in the corners where the metal is folded for leaks, too. Also, make sure that the inlet vents are not obstructed by furniture or clogged with pet fur.
According to the Department of Energy Home Energy Saver site, insulating the ducts of the typical American home costs about $ 250. Duct insulation will pay for itself in energy savings in about two and one years and medium, and continue to save energy and money in the coming years. Depending on your duct work, there are many ways to do this. Some of 6 inches and 8 inches in diameter-leaf metal conduit can be replaced with insulated flexible ducts that costs less than $ 40 by 25 feet in a home center. If you use this, be sure to place so that it is adjusted with the supply lines and use aluminum HVAC tape. Other metal rectangular ducts can be insulated with insulation reflective foil (paper bubble dresses-wrap), ships fiberglass insulation facing, and regulate the gray tape.
Remember: it is not necessary to isolate the air conditioning system inlet, only the output side.
The thing in the attic
Unless your attic is finished, the penthouse is essentially just outside their closed houseâ € ™ s heat. Hot air rises and conducts heat to the structure and the air in your attic and from there into space. Only one thing efficiently maintains and extends the preferred temperature inside your house: isolation.
Heating and cooling account for 50 to 70% of the energy used in the average American household. Inadequate insulation and air leakage are leading causes of energy waste in most homes. Air sealing Wona t ™ € benefit greatly if there is insufficient insulation of the entire house. For most of the country, the U.S. Department of Energy recommended at least R30 (about 1 foot of cellulose or blown fiberglass) for attic insulation and a minimum of R13 (a little over 3 inches of cellulose or fiberglass blowing), on the walls. (http://www.ornl.gov/sci/roofs+walls/insulation/ins_06.html) Unfortunately, most houses built in the last two decades R13 was built in the walls and attic, but few have R30 in the attic.
Leta € ™ s say that your house is R13 blown cellulose insulation in the attic. The penthouse measures 1750 square meters and wea ll ™ € assume that the insulation is installed. In attempting to R30, at least, we need to add another 17 R-valueâ € ™ s insulation in the attic. The easiest way to do this is applicable to any other 5 inches of cellulose blown or put out a front R19 Fiberglass Batts (about 6 inches thick).
To calculate the cost to cover blown cellulose attic space, multiply the square meters the thickness. Therefore: 1750 – 5 inches (or 416 feet) = 728 cubic feet home center sells bags that are 16 cu. Divide the 728 cubic feet. by 16 cubic feet. feet and you get 46 (16 cubic feet) of sacks. Some home centers may include free rental of equipment that blows as an incentive, some not. To make the insulation work effectively, must be spread evenly throughout the attic so as not to form thin spots or voids. Also, to maintain the privacy of soffiting, dams must be built and installed by the end of each rafter (or around bulbs) before turning on the fan isolation.
Fiberglass insulation is usually calculated per square foot. R19 comes in rolls 23 inches wide and 16 inches wide. This is what the insulation is between the joists. Roll lengths vary usually between 48 and 77 feet long (although Batts are available). What to watch is how big is the roll. In other words â € "can be obtained through of attica ™ € s entrance or trap door?
Once youâ € ™ ve decided on what size works for you, divide the square footage (our 1750 square feet) by the length and you have the number of rolls you need. Craft face insulation has a paper in front of a vapor barrier. Because the isolation is added on top of isolation from others in this case there is need for the paper vapor barrier facing. While more expensive than blown cellulose, fiberglass Batts are desirable that can be positioned and put into place or cut as needed. And itâ € ™ s always better to have more.
Now, leta € ™ s say youâ ™ € I discovered how much Needa € | y ™ € you can not pay more than $ 50 at a stretch. Do not worry. The great thing about insulation is that doesn € ™ t need to do at once. You can take your time and build on it. The best way, however, is to determine what area of your home you want to isolate first. Consider these two things: where is the thermostat, and where you spend most of their hours waking in the house? Normally, the thermostat is in the living room and thata € ™ s most people spend their time. The solution is simple here: was in its first packages of insulation in this room. But if the thermostat is in the living room and spend time in another room as a home office, you may want break their isolation from the thermostat area and office. In this case, itâ € ™ s best to take the time to choose your priorities and lifestyle how to proceed from there.
Autumn is the best time to install insulation in your attic. After all, during the summer, this could lead as high as 150A ° F, especially in a poorly ventilated attic. But if you want to start saving money now, during the peak heating season, and later during air conditioning season, now is the best time to do the job. Therefore, Hereâ € ™ s some tips on how make the job easier:
- Know your ™ € attica s design and plan how to fit the insulation in place in advance.
- Buy your privacy the day before the plan to install it. Move and work in a confined space is a lot of time. Start early.
- Itâ € ™ sa dirty work. Be sure to wear long sleeves and pants, gloves, safety glasses and respiratory protection against dust.
- Get help before it can enter and exit the attic faster. The work will go much faster and that they will have someone to complain that the dust.
- Takes about 2 feet by 3 foot pieces of 3 / 4 inch thick plywood in the attic with you. Use them to stand or kneel on as you move through the attic. Often youâ € ™ ll find itâ € ™ s easier on the shins and knees to rest on wood rather than maintaining balance on a beam and the risk of accidents through the drywall ceiling in the bathtub.
- Start at the end and working your way back to his attica € ™ s input. Insulation works best when kept upa œfluffed € â € or uncompressed. You donâ t ™ € want to spend time putting down nice and clean and adjusted only to discover that you must trudge through it to get out of your attic.
- When finished, take a warm shower to remove the fibers, dust and dirt that is adhered to your skin.
- When youâ € ™ ve done attic insulation, you also have to make sure your attic trap door seals. As mentioned, your attic is just outside ™ € s your home thermal envelope so that your attic door is actually a door to the outside. Make sure that closes and seals perfectly. Use of time strip â € "that make a difference.
Heat Shield to the max!
Its roof is a heat shield for your home. But to work most effectively, it must be adequately ventilated. National Roofing Contractors Association recommends 1 square foot of vent opening must be provided for every 150 square feet of ceiling area. (http://www.nrca.net/consumer/fyi.aspx)
If youâ € ™ ve never ventured in an attic on a sunny summer day, you know how hot it can be. Temperatures can easily reach 150A ° F. increases the heat trapped air conditionerâ € ™ s heat load. This raises your energy costs. Trapped heat can also damage the lining of plywood, under layment, tiles and personal items located inside the attic.
Roof ventilation works with two types of vents, an escape and intake. Heater attic air flows through an opening in the top of the roof. This pulls in cooler air to enter through inlets located in the soffiting or fascia. Most houses built in the 1960s onwards the use of a combination of soffit vents and vents, or two water, roof vents, or ridge vents to allow air to flow through the attic. By allowing the attic to breathe and circulate air hot, the house is better able to release the heat absorbed during the day.
Retrofitting roof vents is not as difficult as it sounds. However, can be daunting to climb onto your roof and holes in it. I found the easiest way to install the system ridgevent. Ridgevents kits come in metal or plastic. This has a hollow inside and either vents along the sides or underneath a bridle. By straddling the slot while on the roof wrap ™ € s crest or Peak, allowing heated attic air to make rain while inside.
The actual installation techniques vary slightly depending on equipment You are going to use, very basically, remove the top cover in the ceiling tile and use a circular saw to cut a piece of an inch thick coating of both sides of the roof ™ € s Ridge. If youâ ™ € new full installation of ventilation in length, youâ € ™ ll be cut two slots of the total length of the roof in order to use a sharp blade and take your time. Then you put the ridge vent and mastic down the loose ends.
Now that youâ ™ €'ve seen what you should look in the wrapper of thermal origin, we can start planning where to start, if itâ € ™ s walls, roofs, foundations, floors, windows, doors or ceiling. And while itâ € ™ s import to consider how your house works as a whole, the improvement approach one step at a time. Divide the proposed sealing of your home in smaller, more manageable jobs around the house makes it easier to tackle. Note that all these jobs donâ € ™ t have to do together at once. Tackle ridgevents a weekend, the isolation of another, or a new thermostat a few nights during the week after dinner. You should notice more energy efficiency â € "â € however slight" after each improvement. They join and save money and your home more comfortable. But be sure to take your time to prepare and research, read the instructions, and using good tools.
Above all, be careful when considering projects that seem beyond your skill level. If in doubt, hire a professional. After all, sometimes can actually make yourself do-it-a-ti.
