Ed McBain: The Gutter and the Grave – An Appreciation

Year after year new books waiting for me Ed McBain's like a kid waiting for Christmas, books he produced with some regularity. I never once disappointed. This author does not deliver the goods, as was expected of him, but he was a man born to write.

Evan Hunter or Ed McBain (October 15to, 1926-julio 6, 2005) was a prolific writer, thank God! I will let others say about their life, their successes, and other merits, for now I just want to comment on one of his early novels: The Gutter and the tomb.

The fact that the novel is a production Early (1958), not for a second think that is the work of a beginner. Not at all. A few days ago I read and want to share my impressions about what makes this novel delightful to read.

Echoes

Because the narrative, description, dialogue and action is so fascinating which tend to anticipate keeping up with the narrator's voice, however, if we slow down a bit the ear can choose the cadence and rhythm through the echoes in writing:

"I tried not to notice the lamentable wrinkled suit he wore, or a dirty shirt, or the fact that he had not shaved in a week. Try not to give account of my red eyes, too, but did not succeed in concealing their initial surprise, or the slow adaptation was doing to my appearance. "

In the above excerpt notice how repetitions "He tried not to notice" which along with the repetition of the coordinating conjunction "or" achieving melodic effect.

Nominative absolute

Not only are absolute-nominative constructions of the English language difficult to wield that are unclear, as a result, many writers do not use them. No Ed McBain. He is the owner of the Absolute. And he uses them in different varieties:

"You do not know the voice of a hearse." Laraine said angrily, his eyes aflame. [Noun followed by present participle].

"I think Johnny Bridges saw the initials at the time as I do, because let out a short shriek and then turned to me with eyes full of terror. "[noun + preposition].

"And now, back to the room, sitting with her back stiff and chest thrust forward very high and proud your knees and feet together, lift the chin, the thin bones of the face shining wetly. "[The combinations of names followed by the past and the present participle].

"… The burning of the hips below that, hips delivery covered with a tight black skirt thighs strong and good legs. "[noun last longer].

Similes

While some may criticize their worldly similes, I find appropriate for the genre:

"The mailboxes are usually broken, and the entrance hall is as dark as a satchelful eight balls and the hallways and stairwells all the way to the roof are usually so faint as to life through a eye cataracts.

Figures of thought

I just wanted to stun him, and paralyzing I did.

Without abusing them, we find the rhetorical devices throughout the narrative, as in the example above Anadiplosis, When a word or words that one end of the structure to begin the next.

Style

Notice how the abstract noun pain "is specified by the use of physical action verbs:

"Little by little, the crest of your pain, broke, fell, they retreated."

And in the following example note how the past is used as adjectives:

Dennis Knowles was standing behind his desk with a surprised, amazed, surprised, bewildered and frightened look on his face. "

Correspondence and antithesis

In the following examples, take into account the correlation between "medical" and "nurse" and the antithesis "loud / soft" and "pure innocence / evil more dark.

"There was a physician with strong hands.'s Hands sought each cut and bruise, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning patches.

There was a nurse with soft hands. The gently folded hands in mine when I cried out in pain. "

"His smile was an amazing thing. He managed convey the pure innocence and the darkest of evil in a twist of his mouth twisted. "

Social Value

Within the constraints bound by gender, McBain always found a way to present not only the bad, the ugly and violent, but also to show the good and the redemptive values that makes life worth living in big cities:

"And this is true for players who come from neighborhoods where racial prejudice is taught from the cradle by well meaning parents preparing their children for the hard knocks of life. Does not work with the musicians. There is no room for hatred when three men or six men and a dozen men or two dozen men are blowing their separate sheets and make a conglomerate sound. "

Besides the points that I mentioned above, would continue on McBain techniques to build suspense crackling dialogue and character development. But that's material for another article.
