The Bill Wilson as many do not become an "evangelist" almost immediately after being discharged from Towns Hospital, after had a spiritual experience. For example, Lois Wilson's biographer, wrote:

The doctor [Dr. Silkworth] always allowed Bill to share their experience with God, some patients, hoping somehow it might help. . . . Dr. Shoemaker [the rector at Calvary Episcopal Church] encouraged project legislation to spread the message of change and spiritual recovery to others like him. Bill took the preacher of the word. With the full support of Lois, was soon walking through channel of the Bowery, in the asylum at Bellevue Hospital, down the corridors of fleabag hotels viscous, and in the detoxification unit at Towns with a Bible under arm. Sobriety was promising all the drunks who could corner, if, like him, only to turn their lives to God. [See William G. Borchert, The history by Lois Wilson: When love is not enough: A Biography of the Co-founder of Al-Anon (downtown, MN: Hazelden, 2005), 170.]

In fact, Rev. Sam Shoemaker wrote the bill on 22 January 1935, his testimony praising Bill Frederick E. Breithut which became known as teacher "chemistry". Zapatero wrote:

I hope you realize the seriousness of its guide Jim Williams have met before, I understand he did, in business. His wife, Margaret, is full time in the Group, which has held for a long time. You can be the person who cracks the shell and takes it over. He drinks a lot and is very unhappy and less and needs you have for him. I am grateful for what you did for Breithut. [See Dick B., New Light on Alcoholism: God, Sam Shoemaker, and AA, new. ed. (Kihei, HI: Paradise Research Publications, Inc., 1999), 531.]

And in a 1935 edition the parish bulletin as a shoemaker, Calvary Gospel, was not the announcement "that Frederick E. Breithut was confirmed on 24 March 1935 as a member Calvary Episcopal Church, having previously been sponsored in baptism on 14 March 1935, by William G. Wilson and his godfather, the Rev. Samuel Shoemaker perform baptism. "[See Dick B., New Light on Alcoholism, 558]

The October 1929 issue of The Calvary Gospel contains a photograph of Sam Shoemaker and his staff in total investment preceded by a church member wearing a cross. The photo caption states, "In the way to joy at Madison Square. A member of the church in the photo of 1928 carried a sign that read "Jesus Christ changes lives." urged sign those present to "Come with us to Calvary Church. L. Parks Shipley, Sr., a long-time Oxford activist group, in particular reminded me of such events launched in the 1930s when the march to be followed by witnesses in a park of the grandstand to "." Shipley said he believed that Bill Wilson was one of the "rejoicers" in one or more of these events during Wilson's involvement with the Oxford Group. [See Dick B., New Light on Alcoholism, 556.]

Bill Wilson enthusiastic testimony of the Bible and the power of Jesus Christ bears a different relationship to what Dr. William D. Silkworth told Bill Wilson, during his third visit as a patient at Towns Hospital, Bill before getting sober. Biographer Dr. Silkworth said that Bill had a discussion with Dr. Silkworth on the subject of Medical "Great". And then, Bill concluded: "Yes, if there was a great doctor who could cure the disease of alcohol, you better stand now, the time. "[See Dale Mitchel, Silkworth: The Little Doctor Who Loved drunks: The Biography of William Duncan Silkworth, MD (Center City, MN: Hazelden, 2002), 44.] Biographer Silkworth said, "that was Dr. Silkworth who used the term 'The Great Physician" to explain the need for recovery a relationship with Jesus Christ. "Author Mitchel more:

In the formation of AA, Wilson initially insisted on references to God and Jesus, and the Great Physician. [See Mitchel, Silkworth, 50.]

The fervor of Wilson as the power of Jesus Christ is revealed for his statement on page 191 of Alcoholics Anonymous (4th ed., 2001): "The Lord has cured me of this terrible disease and only I keep talking about it and tell people. "

Deo Gloria

Brought Out Of The Gutter

Brought Out Of The Gutter

I was so impressed with the account of how this formerly despicable man rose out of the gutter to become a humble, dedicated minister of the Gospel, that I asked him if I could write his story, in his own words. This article was first published in T…
