Butts on our beaches

Does anyone really care to see butts on our beaches?

We are, of course, refers to cigarette butts. Saturday once again joined Newport Beach Surfrider Chapter to their regular cleaning Huntington Beach (4 am on Saturday of each month 8-12). We collected a lot of styrofoam coffee cups and lids broken, just as we did last month. This month, however we were aware of the thousands cigarette butts on the beach. So many that we could not make a dent in ourselves an hour to collect them.
Many of the beaches of California are designated smoke-free beaches. Can A list of all smoke-free beaches on the website of the Earth Resources Foundation. Huntington Beach (site of cleaning the beach) is on this list we did not expect to find all these butts. Of course recent rains in southern California have made our streets and canals were cleaned and the water has flowed to the sea through the basin, bringing the cigarette butts disposed of and more.

Most cigarette butts are made of cellulose acetate and are not biodegradable, breaking only for a long period of time, depending on conditions. This time period can be up to 15 years. Butts thereby cause a nasty problem of the environment for many years before they break up. Cigarette butts are also filters for cigarettes and therefore contain the left chemicals from cigarettes. Once in contact with water butts begin leaching of these chemicals, including cadmium, lead, formaldehyde and arsenic in the water. Butts make your way along the river and end up polluting the ocean and inside the intestines and stomachs fish, whales, dolphins, birds and numerous other marine animals.
If you are a smoker, I understand that cigarette butts are not biodegradable and only separated during time period. It will cause many environmental problems. So hold onto your butts. For us non-smokers, smokers let your friends know their butts end up on our beaches and tell them what they can do about it. Participate in beach cleanups and not be afraid to pick up cigarette butts. In most beach cleaning gloves are provided, so no no need to touch them with your hands.

Last week, Dudley and Melanie were on the island of Tonga, which is in the South Pacific. This is a small country made for many coral islands. There are no rivers or lakes on the main island of Tongatapu, and the only fresh water is rain water that is collected and stored. In small islands such as the sustainability of these is very important for a healthy human population. All items must be returned to use as much as possible. While on the island we visited a local coffee shop to enjoy the drink of Tonga. No disposable coffee cups sold here, so we are happy to enjoy our drinks in glass cups provided.

Of course there is no reason why we, as Americans and Canadians can not do what the Tongans and reuse of our coffee mugs and many other things as well. Sustainability is important for all countries. All we have to reduce our impact on the environment in any way we can.
