Does anyone in the snow belt use heat tape in their rain gutters and a couple of feet on the roof?

Does it work? Prevent ice dams?

I had a house in the snow belt in southern Ohio a few years ago he suffered from ice dams in the gutters. Thaw had installed cables zigzagging by the leading edges and down the pumps. I didn't use it to prevent icing, but when it got bad, I turned it on for 45 minutes and melted a ravine through the ice and ran out the bottom. It's not cheap to run, if you add in the electricity bill, but was very effective. Just remember, when you turn it off, the ice reform itself. Overall, I was glad they had it installed.
