Terminology training: What does all this mean!

Terminology training: What does all this mean!

As I read through some of the previous posts, I think I'm using dog training terms and verbiage without actually having never explained or defined the event. Trainer bad! Well, we're going to take care of that right here and now. We will cover the meaning of positive and negative markers. Markers are nothing more than how we let our dogs know when they have done something good or bad.

Let's start with the positive marker. Most people just say "good dog" when the dog does something right. I, however, use a clicker, a single engine noise when you press a button makes clear and coherent noise (or mark) that the dog can relate to. There are several reasons for this, but the largest is "NO DOG'S SPEAK ENGLISH!" I know there are people out there who argue this point with me, but dogs do not really understand human language usually do. Yes, they can, over a period of time, to know that means sitting my butt on the ground, but they can also learn pineapple sorbet means putting my ass on the floor if I spend the same amount of time association of words and behavior! I also noticed that different people use a tone of voice to make positive or negative behavior and this can confuse a dog, as their primary means of understanding the tone and body language. The other real reason for my preference to use a clicker is the time! We as human beings rarely mark a behavior with our voice with the correct timing. We either before or after and can make for a very confused dog. Let me give you an example really simplistic it might shed some light on this. Say you're working with Fido Sit and say SIT and presto Fido gets his butt on the floor, but they were very clever and say "Good Dog" a little late. In those couple of precious seconds Fido has not only granted, but a flea has bitten, see a butterfly purple and smell the poop in the neighbor's backyard! Now Fido in the world, he has to find out which of these four behaviors got you good dog. Yes, he will find it in time, but why not use a positive marker that can pinpoint the exact time the correct behavior happened, and take all human inflections out of the picture? Enter the clicker. The idea is that at the exact moment Fido rump hits the ground and then we click reinforced with a reward, maybe a nice treatment of liver! Wow, that Pavlov Skinner and be proud of you. Yes, you already knew this from your high school or college Psychology 101 class, do you remember of operant conditioning classic?

Now what about the negative marker? Well, from my perspective as a coach, I am amazed that most dogs I do not think that is called "NO, NO BAD DOG" Because that is what most owners say their dog has done something inappropriate or wrong. Once again I repeat, " DOGS DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH ", so screaming, pleading, explain or discuss a dog will not understand what in the world you want. Say you want to be concise and clear and decides to use only the word "NO" to the mark of a bad behavior of your dog? Then you're back to being human and forgetting to think like a dog! Does it mean NO or KNOW? If you live in a house like mine where there are 6 and 10 years of age, children running around, how many times is that the word in daily use? The next thing you know that dog will have a nervous tic and hide in the corner because he has no idea who is receiving the mark. This also brings up the idea of indifference learned. Let me give you an example. I'm a dad excursions for children, and I hear the word Dad 4362 times a day. You honestly do not think that word from time to tune in when? "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, Daddy !!!!!!!! Hey … are you talking to me?" Sound familiar? The moral of this story … do not be a dog owner command over and over and over again. The real message here, communicate with your dog as a dog person! So what I can use as a negative mark? Just a simple sound, a syllable AAAGGGH! (Not sure of spelling), but it sounds like the egg of words with the hard G at the end, guttural.

Note that the brand is less negative about the dog doing something wrong and more about how to stop dog behavior Bad enough time for me to direct the dog proper behavior, so you can reward good! This is the largest base of face, if not all, problems dog behavior and will be a future post. But we still need to cover the words of liberation and signs (verbal and hand signals) in the next post, terminology PART 2.
