Learn Spanish – and how to pronounce it – the easy way

The first thing to get to grips with when learning Spanish is the way of pronouncing Spanish words. The 12 short rules explain how to do just that.

This article discusses the GENERAL RULES OF SPANISH PRONUNCIATION and spoken in Spain and in particular along the southern coast in areas such as Marbella.

Note that Spain has four official national languages: Castilian Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Basque.

Castilian Spanish is the language distribution in Spain but there are different dialects of Spanish Castile and different forms of pronunciation.

Spanish pronunciation in the south of Spain is very different from other parts of the country, for example, the letter C before E or not lisped (ie, making a sound "th") and the rest of the country. The pronunciation in the South is more similar to that of Latin America that, for example, in Madrid.

These are the basic rules:

1. The letters B and V are pronounced exactly the same way, ie both sound as a B. This is most noticeable when the B or V starts the word. It sounds a little softer when the B and V appears in the middle of the word. (Phonetics = be, the "e" as in the English word "go)

2. C is pronounced K (as in "cat") when followed by the A, O or U. vowels, for example, the house (house). When the C is followed by the vowel E or I, the C switch to a TH sound like in five (five) and zero (zero). However, in Latin America and southern Spain C, pronounce as a simple S. (Phonetic = Kah or meetings)

3. D is pronounced like D, but often not pronounced at all at the end of a word, as in FREEDOM (freedom, freedom) and Madrid. (= In phonics, the "E" as in the English word "go)

4. G is pronounced as a guttural G (as in the 'lake' from the Scottish word) when followed by E or I, as Gitano (Gypsy). When followed by A, O, U, UE or the user interface that is pronounced as a hard G, as in CAT (cat). Note that the U is usually not pronounced in the combinations GUE and GUI. (Ch = phonetic guttural or hard g as in 'the door' of the English word)

5. H is silent in Spanish, except in the CH combination, such as milk (milk) and Chico (boy). (Che = phonetic, as in the English word 'Champion')

6. J is always pronounced as a guttural G as BOSS (Boss). (Phonetics = see G, item 4.)

7. Pronunciation LL varies throughout the Spanish speaking world, but it is still more like the way we use and as in the SI. (Y phonetic =)

8. Ñ is like the "or" sound in "onion", for example, tomorrow (tomorrow, tomorrow). (Phonetics = ni-and-ah)

9. Q is always followed by the EU or the user interface. Is pronounced as K (as in "cat") and the U is silent, for example cheese (cheese). (Kah phonetic =)

10. R is pronounced as an R, as in boat (boat), but pronounced RR (double / mobile R, more emphatic) where the research is the first letter of a word eg BRANCH (branch) and break (break). The RR double consonant is always pronounced like RR, and dogs (dog). (Phonetic = stressed r)

11. S is pronounced S, but according to the dialect can sound more like a Z when it appears in the middle of a word. For example, SAME (equal) sounds more like mizmar and BOTH (both of them) can LoZ sound more like DOS. (Phonetics = s as in 'same')

12. Z is pronounced like TH, as in the shoe (footwear), but again, in America America and southern Spain, it sounds like an S. (Phonetic º =)

There are more letters in the Spanish alphabet in English. Do you know why?
