Is My Roof OK?

Whether you are hanging holiday decorations or cleaning out gutters anytime you are on a ladder is a perfect time to inspect your roof for wear. Here is a basic do it yourself guide for looking for problems on your roof. Remember to be safe. Getting on a roof is hazardous and potentially deadly.

• Look at your shingles. They should be covered with little  colored pebbles called granules. Do you see any bald patches? Do you see large amounts of a substance that looks like sand in your gutters?

• Are you missing any shingles? Do you see cracked or buckled shingles? How about curled or brittle shingles?

• Is the metal on your roof (the flashings) rusted out? Are there gaps between the metal and the roofing material? Do you see any holes left from rusted out nails?

• How do the eaves and the fascia look? Is the wood soft or discolored? Are the gutters firmly attached?

• If your roof has valleys without metal are there any signs of rot or softness? If your roof has valleys with metal are they rusted out? Are the valleys full of debris?

• Is your roof covered in moss? Does it have dark streaks (algae growth)?

This is by no means an exhaustive list of problems you might find. Our hope is that this list will give you a starting point for spotting potential problems before your roof leaks. If you find problems with your roof contact a licensed roofer to get your roof repaired or replaced correctly the first time.
