Gutter Coil

Whatever the weatherman or the almanac says, we know that the hot season really ends with the change of clocks to mark the beginning of standard time again. Mornings are suddenly dark and frigid, and we know that winter is upon us. Protect your home and garden investment – by taking some time to batten down the hatches outdoors before the snow flies!

Last chance for repairs

Start by looking up. The roof and eaves feeders must be in good condition to protect your home in the coming months. In particular, ensure that clear and debris from gutters and downspouts; if the forces of melting ice block back against the shingles, it is treated with an ice dam – a serious threat to the integrity of your roof. While're checking Valley eaves, make a visual inspection of the roof itself – looking for loose or broken tiles, damaged or vents. Check your chimney for any loose bricks or crumbling mortar. Mortar is temperature sensitive and difficult to repair as the weather cools. Any work in the ceiling should be considered as a work of two people, we should add. Always have a strong adult constant level for the person working on the roof.

Now is the time to repair a fence, network, or trellis – before the winter winds and ice take their toll.

Tuning tool shed

More than one beautiful garden tool has met its demise too soon, because it was left out during the winter. From your yard and garden tools have been working hard this summer and will be in need of proper care and storage for the winter. Start by removing any dirt covered with a wire brush well, some gardeners prefer using a wire whisk attachment on a power drill. Now is the time to sharpen tools that have been mitigated by the use of a season: the hoe, shovels, pruners, loppers and saws, if any. As you are cleaning, carefully check in tools for screws and nuts. Finally, all parts of metal spray and cutting edges with a good penetrating oil like WD-40. Olive wood handles with linseed should be cleaned to prevent cracking and drying.

Tools power often have special requirements at the end of the season. In general, you should change your oil and spark plugs of any team, and have sharp blades. This can be done professionally, if you prefer.

Before freezing

Garden hoses do not require much care, and is easy to forget them at the end of the season. But take some time to straighten and drain your hose, and store it in a loose coil or on a reel – not hanging on a nail. Sure do not leave a chance for water to enter the hose during the winter months. If you have an irrigation system, make sure that the winter as well – blowing the lines to ensure that ice does not have the opportunity to divide and break the waterlines below ground. Turn off any outside taps at source, then drain them at the tap.

Trucks, cars and wagons, these workhorses also deserve some attention at the end of the season. Touch any paint chips and treatment of rust stains. Give wheels a spray of oil to keep them running smoothly.

Turn the lights you will need your lighting outside as the nightfall comes sooner. Take time to replace bulbs and ensure that everything changes and timers are adjusted for the reduction daylight time.
