Drill / Drivers with their heads in Quality and Cost

Getty Images What is the difference between a $ 30 drill and a drill $ 300? Our DIYer digging to find out.

I recently established to drill through five sheets of colored Plexiglas wall hanging I was doing. I borrowed a cordless drill with driver (which works as a title = "cordless drill battery" cordless drill battery> and power) of a contractor I know who willingly admits to being a tool snob. Her practice Festool made a German manufacturer American DIYers many of us have never heard of.

But, oh man, that finely tuned instrument boring Plexiglas that lasts like a hot knife through butter. The feeling of using a higher precision, right – with its exquisite balance and power – it was so nice really considered starting another wall hanging that I could do more drilling!

That's the difference between working with a tool designed and finely manufactured and made a cheap and sloppy. The first makes you look forward to the work, the latter making you fear each task.

Of course, you already know the downside principal of the primary tools: the enormous price tags. While the cheaper drill / driver can be found in a big box store runs a $ 30 fine, a Festool cordless drill costs about $ 350 or more.

The good news: there is a middle when it comes to exercise power (. Title = "power tool battery" battery of tools>) For example, you can buy nominal drill Consumer Reports wireless high plus / driver (usually in the country of use), the Panasonic Model # EY6432GQKW, for about $ 200. It is a model of 15.6 volts, which is about midrange.

GRADES cordless drill

When ready to buy a new cordless drill with driver, note that there are two general categories for the home DIYer (excluding high strength exercises designed for industrial work size):

Contractor Grade: This is the best quality, more expensive exercise, the brand, most likely find a professional job includeHitachi site.Manufacturers ($ 80 – $ 130), Porter Cable ($ 100 – $ 170), Milwaukee ($ 190), Panasonic ($ 185 – $ 200)
Makita ($ 110 – $ 270), and DeWalt ($ 140 – $ 300)

– Level of use:
This is of lower quality, less expensive exercises designed for home use. Manufacturers include Ryobi ($ 30 – $ 200), Artisan ($ 40 – $ 120), Black & Decker ($ 60 – $ 110), Skil ($ 60 – $ 110), Ridgid ($ 140)

(Note: These are the price ranges of cordless drills tested by Consumer Reports.)

So why the disparity in price? Consider the differences between the least expensive car you can buy (for example, a Hyundai Accent for about $ 11,000) and a more expensive car (like a BMW 5 Series tourism at $ 50,000). While cheaper cars get from point A to point B, usually come with a lot of road noise, uncomfortable seats, and perhaps without the benefit air conditioning and sound system. It's the same class with tools that usually work better, feel better and last longer.

SAVE VS. WASTE FACTORS

You do not have to buy top of the line battery drill "drill Electrical> / drivers to experience a great performance, but you have to draw the line at some point if you want to avoid frustration, a-lifetime short and poor quality results. Consider these factors when deciding what to spend on your cordless drill:

1. Speed
In general, tool faster, better performance. At least, the purchasing power drill should have high and low speeds. High speed is for drilling and low speed for driving screws. The speed is measured in rpm (revolutions per minute). A healthy is 1,300 rpm or more. Drills with 800 or less can be frustrating to operate and will not bore easily across a surface or not to tighten a bolt properly.

2. Power
The energy available for
your cordless drill is measured in volts (V). The least powerful tools on the market are about to 6V, while the more powerful are about 24V. My favorite small drill / drivers, which fit nicely in my hand still pack a lot of juice, are about 9.6V. Average power drills are about 14 V, while the chunky models, the type that can be found in the hands of a framing carpenter, would be 18V – probably too much power for casual or novice DIYer. Anything less than 9.6V is not likely that the value of their money. (Disagreeing Defend your electric drill in the comments below!)

3. Batteries
When it comes to cordless tools, the battery makes all the difference. First, find out how long the batteries are responsible for the kinds of jobs that will. If you're planning to hang a pair of curtain rods, or assemble a picture frame, any model maintains the charge long enough for you to do the job. But if you're doing larger work, such as installing rain gutters to big house, the battery can not reach the final without having to be recharged. Of course, most cordless drills come with two batteries so one can be loaded while another is in use. If you plan to do much work with your drill / driver for a long period of time, check out the cost of batteries new. Some high-level tools thus require batteries cost over $ 100. Decide whether the convenience of long battery life worth the extra cost. And keep in mind that some batteries can make cordless tools heavier than the equivalent of cable tools. Drill, 3.5 pounds is considered light, and 5 pounds or more is considered heavy.

4. Hand feeling
This may be the subject less considered by HUM and others, but among the most important. All hands are different, it is fair to say, and some tools that fit and feel perfect in person, on the one hand you can feel totally uncomfortable in a another. Hold any drill / driver that you're thinking – with the battery installed, so you will have a better idea of the tool weight – in the shoulder level for a minute or less to prove. For women, a smaller tool may feel better. feel the hands is more than convenience, but can affect the outcome of their project significantly. Therefore, if you have to pay a little more than a drill that feels better in your hands, consider it worth investment.

5. LED
This is a fairly new development in the industry leading an LED light right where you are drilling or driving a screw. If you ever crawled inside a cabinet to attach it to the wall, you know how life-changing light on the drill / driver would be. Depending on your needs, this convenient feature could be worth the extra money.
