Is there a machine that can be hired to help build a small trench easier in my backyard?

I want to add an irrigation system before you set the top soil and grass in the yard (we had to draw it all up, soil builders meant 1 inch topsoil on top of the yards of clay.) We have both the excavation of land to build a retaining wall and 6 inches down to just not have the energy or time to dig the trench by the blade. Also only 5.6 meters away to get a machine through, so no big tractors, etc. Oh, also some advice about what type of soil to use. Clay so we can dig down as what type of topsoil would be good for put in it? We were told to put sand and mix, but then told another person that would cause more drainage problems. We also put in a drainage system to remove water from the gutter, so I'm not so worried about the drainage, only for the health of the lawn and plants.
