Sail maker amateur – the candle problem of smoke?

I bought a pair of candles in a scent I really like. They are based on soy, and burns at a temperature relatively low. However, the flame is very smoky, and "gutter" often. Is this a function of the wick, or the materials in the candle itself? If the wick material, I would be willing to melt the wax (I have a double boiler) and put a wick in it again. Can you help? And what type of fuse should I use to replace what is?

Soy Candlemaking websites say that due to lower combustion temperature, the wick should be kept short – Some recommend 1 / 8 "and even say to blow the candle Retrim periodically. Maybe then turn there is something wrong with the candle, but it is worth trying this first.
