Finding The Right Bird Deterrent For Your Situation

For many of us, having birds in the yard is a wonderful thing. However, when they turn into pests, poop on everything, bend the gutter on the house, and get into everything, they may be less desired than originally thought. It is not that people want to cause harm to them, but having a bird deterrent can save money as well as headaches in the long run.

Originally, the only way to get rid of our feathery friends was with trained predators like hawks, by shooting them with bird shot, or by poisoning them. No matter what method was used, by today’s standards, it is considered cruel and usual punishment. Environmentalists, however, have led the way in developing more humane ways of discouraging the pesky critters.

The best part of today’s methods for deterring unwanted visitors is the fact they are not only humane, but effective. Everything from high tech gadgets to simple and economical fix-alls are now available. Fortunately, the majority can be used in just about any location and situation providing immediate relief that will eventually become permanent.

Research has shown that birds can be deterred by things that utilize their natural fears. For example, they do not like things that move, wiggle in the wind or look like they have big, open eyes. For many years, homeowners have placed aluminum pie tins on strings in their trees or silver streamers that move when the wind blows. This does work and is perhaps the least expensive alternative available. However, advancement in this field has developed alternatives that are much more effective.

Popular alternatives include inflatable balloons which are available with big, scary eyes that have reflective foil or flash tape. These are excellent around patios, pools, and open areas and look attractive as well. These work because of the basic fear birds have of anything that resembles a predator. These are called chasers and are the most economical solution.

Another effective deterrent are bird gels. Similar to caulk and applied with a gun much like used in construction, this sticky substance is very difficult for our feathery friends to stand on. One need not fear, however, as they are not poisonous if swallowed either by birds or humans. This is perfect for I-beams, ledges, pipes, and curved or flat surfaces where birds are likely to land.

A more popular choice today is the spike strip. These are ideal when one is dealing with larger fowl like pigeons. They are maintenance-free and are super easy to install. They appear rather menacing, but are totally harmless. Its unbreakable polycarbonate shell is especially good for use in areas where electrical conductivity may prevent the use of metal alternatives.

There are so many options that it is not possible to list them all. The important thing is that birds can be welcomed in key areas of the yard, but can’t be kept from causing costly, harmful damage where they are not wanted.
